Cześć, and dzień dobry from Szczecin! We, the new 21 volunteers in POLITES arrived in the past few weeks. 17 of us started working in the kindergarten whereas the other 4 work in the office.
We spent the past month participating in various workshops, which focused on teambuilding, communication and solidarity and we learned about Poland’s history in the 20th century, different forms of education (formal, non-formal and informal) and ways to create good workshops. Thanks again to our amazing workshop leaders!
We also helped in a few projects such as MIASTO DZIECI (a mini (art) festival for children), Bank Żywności Szczecin (in order to pack food packages for victims of the flood in southern Poland) and WĘDRUJĄCE PUDŁO (a mobile playground).
Right now, we are slowly getting used to our new work environments, get to know our tasks and the children in the kindergarten. At the same time, we are gradually participating in the On-Arrival-Training in Warsaw and discover Poland’s colorful capital.
To get a closer insight into our first impressions and experiences, we asked some questions to the volunteers.
What was your first impression of Szczecin?
Mouad: “My first impression of Szczecin is that it’s a mixture of modern and historical buildings and my favorite thing about the city is its parks.”
What was your best experience so far?
Ace: “My best experience has been meeting all of the other volunteers and enjoying what the city has to offer to young people like us.”
What are your first impressions of the volunteering work?
Mahdi: “Honestly, the experience exceeded my expectations. I felt motivated and realized that I’m capable of doing even more work and contributing more to the community.”
What is your favorite thing about Szczecin?
Mahdi: “What I love the most about Szczecin is the beautiful nature and fresh air. I also enjoy the availability of vegetarian food.”
How will you survive winter?
Elliot: “The same way as I do in Germany, wear thick clothes, eat warm food, drink warm drinks and pray I don’t freeze!”
Mahdi: “I am very prepared for winter! I’ve received plenty of advice from Polish people on how to handle the cold, such as wearing warm clothes, taking the right supplements, and the importance of exercising to maintain both mental and physical health.”
Ace: “I already bought vitamin C and D, and for the cold and rainy days I’m planning on going to museums and nice cafes with my friends”
Thanks for having us, POLITES! To hopefully 10 great months, filled with many memorable moments!
